Smart #2 details: 35.8kWh battery, 300km target and a 6.95m turning circle
Smart has confirmed a 35.8kWh battery, around 300km WLTP target range, rear-wheel drive and a 6.95m turning circle for its electric #2 two-seater ahead of its Paris Motor Show premiere on 12 October.
Smart has given the first technical details of its #2, the electric two-seater that revives the Fortwo, confirming a 35.8kWh battery, a target of around 300km on the WLTP cycle and a 6.95m turning circle.
The figures came at a technical workshop in Beijing ahead of the car’s world premiere at the Paris Motor Show on 12 October. Smart says they are preliminary and subject to homologation, and the range figure is a target that has not yet been certified.

New platform, rear drive
The #2 sits on a new platform smart calls the Electric Compact Architecture, developed for the under-three-metre car by its global engineering team. The battery uses CATL cells and DC charging from 10 to 80% is quoted at 20 minutes. An 11-in-1 drive unit combines the motor, power electronics and control functions to save space.
Like the original Fortwo, it is rear-wheel drive, with 50:50 weight distribution. Smart says it is the only car under three metres with five-link independent rear suspension, and every version runs staggered tyres, narrower at the front than the rear. The kerb-to-kerb turning circle is 6.95m.

Tridion cell carries on
The car keeps a version of the Fortwo’s visible safety cell, now called the Tridion Cell Evo. More than 78% of the body structure is high-strength steel, with some materials rated to 1800MPa, and smart quotes torsional stiffness of 39,000Nm per degree and a roof load rating of more than four tonnes.

There are seven airbags, and the seatbelts use pyrotechnic lap pretensioners and a locking tongue to limit forward movement in a crash. Smart says the car completed the moose test at 78km/h and has a static rollover angle of 45.9 degrees.

The styling is by the Mercedes-Benz design team, keeping the wheels at the corners and short overhangs of the original.
“The smart #2 embodies the essence of smart. It brings our iconic two-seater into a new electric era, combining an ultra-compact footprint with intelligent technology, uncompromising safety and the effortless urban agility that has always defined smart,” says smart global chief marketing officer Kang Yi.
The #2 first appeared in Chinese regulatory filings in August. Smart has not said whether it will be sold in New Zealand.
