Volkswagen’s electric ID.4 replacement will be called the ID. Tiguan

Volkswagen’s electric replacement for the ID.4 and ID.5 will carry the Tiguan name. The ID. Tiguan makes its world premiere in early October and goes on sale from the beginning of 2027.

It is the third model to move to Volkswagen’s new naming approach, following the ID. Polo and ID. Cross. The company says using established names gives customers clearer orientation.

The electric model will be sold alongside the existing Tiguan, which continues with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Until the reveal, prototypes are continuing to test in camouflage wrap.

“More than 8.3 million Tiguan vehicles produced demonstrate the strength and trust associated with this model name,” said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand. “With the ID. Tiguan, we are carrying this product promise into the electric future. The all-electric model builds on the strengths of the bestseller and offers premium design, generous space, intuitive operation and innovative technologies.”

Big shoes to fill

The Tiguan is currently the best-selling model worldwide for both the Volkswagen brand and the wider Volkswagen Group. Deliveries of the Tiguan and its sister model, the Tayron, passed one million units in the past year.

The ID.4 and its fastback sibling, the ID.5, have also done well for the company, with more than 950,000 delivered since 2021. Volkswagen counts them among the most successful battery electric model lines in the group.

Volkswagen has not released specifications, pricing or range figures yet. The prototypes show a more upright, conventional SUV shape than the ID.4, and full details are due at the premiere next month.
