Ford cuts Ranger Hybrid plug-in ute prices by up to $8000

Ford has cut the Ranger Hybrid XLT to $74,990 and the Wildtrak to $85,990, bringing its plug-in ute closer to BYD and GWM rivals.

Ford New Zealand has cut the price of its Ranger Hybrid plug-in ute by up to $8000, with the XLT now $74,990 plus on-road costs, down from $82,990.

The Wildtrak drops $4000, from $89,990 to $85,990. The updated 2026.50 model year range, now arriving at dealers, is cut back to those two grades.

“Demand for Ranger Hybrid has been strong, and we’ve listened,” says Ford New Zealand marketing director Mathew Slade.

Both grades swap chrome for gloss and matte black trim inside and out, and get new wheel designs. Both also now have a 12-inch touchscreen and a 12.4-inch digital instrument display, up from eight inches in the Wildtrak, and a Mode 2 home charging cable is now included.

The XLT has 17-inch alloys, a drop-in bedliner, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, dual-zone climate control with rear vents, and steel underbody protection. The Wildtrak adds 18-inch wheels, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, a black powered roller shutter, Matrix LED headlights, heated leather-accented front seats, eight-speaker B&O audio and ambient lighting. Ignite Orange replaces Cyber Orange on the Wildtrak’s colour list.

The cuts bring the Ranger closer to its plug-in hybrid rivals. On list prices, the XLT now sits $3000 above the BYD Shark 6 Premium and $4000 below the Shark 6 Performance. BYD’s current Pick Your Perk offer brings the Performance down to $74,990, the same as the new Ranger XLT.

GWM is cheaper again. The Cannon Hi4-T Lux is $16,000 below the XLT and the Ultra $12,000 below, while the larger Cannon Alpha Ultra Hi4-T is currently advertised at $69,990.

On paper, the Ranger gives away power and electric range. Its 2.3-litre turbo petrol engine and electric motor make 207kW and 697Nm, against 321kW and 650Nm for the Shark 6 Premium, 350kW and 700Nm for the Performance, 310kW and 750Nm for the Cannon Hi4-T and 300kW and 750Nm for the Cannon Alpha PHEV.

Ford quotes 43km of electric range on the WLTP cycle, against 80km WLTP for the Shark 6 Performance. The Shark 6 Premium claims 100km and the GWM models up to 115km, but those are on the older NEDC cycle and are not directly comparable.
