BYD Sentry Mode is real, but only on the Sealion 8 in NZ
BYD's Sentry Mode video is genuine, but in New Zealand the feature is only on the Sealion 8 and won't be added to existing models.
A BYD video showing owners how to use Sentry Mode has been doing the rounds in New Zealand EV owner groups this week, with some asking whether it was real or AI-generated. It is real, but in New Zealand the feature is only available on the Sealion 8.
The video was posted on Hi BYD, the company’s official owner channel on YouTube.
Sentry Mode uses the car’s exterior cameras to record while it is parked.
BYD New Zealand country manager Warren Willmot confirmed the feature is on the Sealion 8 and will be on some future models. A BYD spokesperson said Sentry Mode will not be added retrospectively to existing models.
