The Ministry of Transport reported the number in a tweet this afternoon, pointing out the target for 2017 is to hit 4000 by the end of the year.

With over 100 Nissan Leafs alone hitting the road each month, that target is likely to be significantly exceeded. Tesla entering the market and, Hyundai launching the Ioniq and Mitsubishi updating the Outlander PHEV are also boosting sales.

The overall government target is for the fleet to reach 64,000 by 2021.
