Tech giants project extreme volumes of vehicle data

A consortium of technology corporations and Toyota predicts extreme volumes of data generated by autonomous vehicles.

Denso, Ericsson, Intel, NTT Data and Toyota Motor Corporation have initiated a collaborative consortium to develop an ecosystem for autonomous connected vehicles.

The consortium plans to support emerging mobility services such as intelligent driving, mapping and real-time data streams, and driving assistance based on cloud computing.

Data volumes are expected to reach new heights by 2025, predicted to reach 10 exabytes – which is double the amount of words spoken by the human race ever. That’s 10,000 times more data than at current-day volumes.

This demand for data, Toyota says in its press release, “will trigger the need for new architectures or network and computing infrastructure.”

The consortium plans to invite other relevant global technology leaders to collaborate, as it establishes edge computing and develops use cases for emerging mobile devices and the automotive industry.

This week Intel promised plans to build 100 self-driving vehicles on the road which could rely on the consortium’s cloud-based data networking infrastructure.
