Byton aims to be premium global EV brand

The first driveable prototype from Byton debuts at the Consumer Technology Association’s CES show In Las Vegas on January 9-12.

Since forming in 2016, Byton has established a global operations centre, manufacturing base and global research and development centre in Nanjing, China, an R&D centre responsible for the design of prototype and concept models in Munich, Germany, and a newly operational North American headquarters in Silicon Valley.

Byton aspires to build premium intelligent EVs. Its crafted cars integrate advanced digital technologies to offer customers a smart, safe, comfortable and eco-friendly driving and mobility experience.

The name stems from the phrase ‘Bytes on Wheels’ –representing the internet and automobiles.

The company has also formed strategic partnerships with automotive parts suppliers Bosch and Faurecia.

Features in Byton EVs include a 49 inch by 10 inch large-size screen – a smart human-vehicle interface, and a touch screen steering wheel with gesture recognition.

Top experts from Tesla and Apple have joined Byton, new team members Tom Wessner (global supply senior vice-president) and Jeff Chung (intelligent car experience vice-president) joining co-founder and chief executive officer Dr Carsten Breitfeld and co-founder and president Dr Daniel Kirchert.

Byton intends launching three models – an SUV, sedan and MPV – in the next five years.

The first production SUV model will launch in the fourth quarter of 2019, while the sedan and MPV are due out in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
