Electric MotoGP for motorcycles in 2019

Electric motorbikes are expected to start racing in their own MotoGP class in 2019.

Global motorsports company Dorna Sports is organising the series and has held the commercial and television rights to MotoGP events since 1991.

Italian electric bike maker Energica is coming on board as the sole motorcycle supplier, providing race-prepared versions of its Ego model.

Road and racing electric motorcycles have been limited by battery life and overall weight, but these are expected to be sorted in 2018.

Dorna may build solar charging stations at various race tracks, Newatlas.com says. However, the Ego’s 11.7 kWh battery may produce more energy than short races require.
