Bitcoin will be accepted as payment at one of Japan’s biggest used car dealerships.

Idom will first start the service at its 24 dealerships, but aims to eventually take the digital currancey at 550 additional locations after partnering with Japan’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Bitflyer, to integrate the payment system, Finance Magnates reports.

The service is expected to start at Idom’s Liberala dealerships on December 20, which specialise in luxury cars like Bentley, BMW, and Audi. Each will accept payment in Bitcoin of up to 100 million yen (NZ$1.27 million) per purchase.

Following Bitcoin integration at the 24 locations, Idom plans to introduce the payment service at its subsidiary brand Gulliver’s 550 stores across the country.

Gulliver also has stores in New Zealand and the US.

While Gulliver NZ has been invited to comment, it appears the information from Idom may not yet have been made available to it.

“Experimentally, we will start to operate with Liberala, and then we are considering introducing it to Gulliver stores, which [there] are approximately 550 stores nationwide (Japan),” Idom says.

The growing popularity of Bitcoin, not only in Japan but worldwide, is Idom’s reason to start the Bitcoin acceptance service.

Earlier this month, second-hand car dealership group L’operaio began accepting Bitcoin at three of its dealerships in Tokyo
