Renewing driver licence online likely

A draft rule change allowing driver licence renewal online has been prepared by the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA).

It’s ready to begin public consultation on the move and plans to discuss consultation timing with the coalition Government, Stuff reports.

To renew a licence, drivers currently need to attend a New Zealand Automobile Association or Vehicle Testing NZ office.

Eye tests are part of that process, so it’s likely these will be less frequent. Drivers also have the option of supplying a current eyesight or medical certificate.

The Ministry of Transport has suggested a one-off eye test when people first apply for a licence, and that drivers will have to declare they can see properly when renewing a licence.

It says the main benefit of online renewals is reducing the time applicants spend travelling to an agent for licence renewals.

There is “considerable evidence that repeated vision testing does not have significant safety benefits”, the NZTA has told transport minister Phil Twyford.

The agency says allowing online renewals is consistent with the Government’s goal of improving public services.
