Electric spark to car events

Car events are increasingly taking an electric focus.

Electricarna, a new event for EVs coinciding with Americarna, was held in New Plymouth on February 24.

Catherine Cheung of Climate Justice Taranaki says the event organised to coincide with Americarna to provide contrast to the region’s car enthusiasts.

She hopes Electricarna will be an annual event.

Around the corner, hundreds of fossil-fuelled engines and left-hand drives featured in Americarna.

Meanwhile, the Twin Rivers Motoring Extravaganza in Christchurch on February 25 attracted EVs as well.

The Christchurch EV Group was among those attending the event at the Canterbury A&P Showgrounds, last year’s show cancelled because of rain.

Funds were raised for a van for the Cholmondeley Children’s Centre, replacing one previously provided by Avonhead Rotary.

The Leading the Charge EV road trip around New Zealand starting March 14 will have a number of car displays and opportunities for people to ride in or drive an EV.

Coinciding with the road trip, Justin Boyd of the Waikato EV Owners Group is planning a big EV display in Hamilton City on March 28, with more than 35 EVs across a wide range expected.
