Shelby Cobra sports a Tesla motor

Electric motors and battery packs are going in to classic cars as the electric vehicle market grows, providing opportunities for enthusiasts.

One such project is a classic 427 Shelby Cobra fibreglass body replica paired with a Tesla motor and a Kia Soul EV battery pack providing 30kWh of power.

also reports it’s heard of an all-electric 818 kit car with a Tesla drivetrain running a quarter-mile in 10.1 seconds and conversion of a 1969 VW Karmann Ghia.

A group of friends based in Vancouver, British Columbia, got together for the Shelby project, aiming to race the all-electric car.

They built the chassis themselves and used a mould of the 427 Shelby Cobra for a fibreglass replica of the body with the aim of having a light-weight vehicle.

One of the engineers working on the project shared a few pictures on the Tesla Motors Club forum.

They are using the rear-wheel-drive motor of a Tesla Model S P85 to power the vehicle, rated at 310 kW.

The Shelby EV should be on the track later this year.

Another EV conversion is Jason Hughes’ 1000hp Mitsubishi 3000GT using a Tesla drivetrain and Chevy Volt batteries. He’s using two Tesla performance motors.
