Audi e-tron production model unveiled

Audi’s first all-electric SUV production model had its world premiere on September 18 in the USA.

Initial deliveries to European customers are planned for late 2018, and in Germany the starting prices is 79,900 euros.

The e-tron was first teased in 2016 and is part of a drive by parent company Volkswagen Group to electrify all its models by 2030.

While the range was not confirmed at the San Francisco world premiere, Audi says it has a long range – expected to exceed 400km.

The five-seater is not expected in the USA until mid-2019 where it will start at US$74,800.

Standard features include 20-inch wheels, air suspension, LED lighting, temperature-controlled seats, a panoramic sunroof, inductive wireless smartphone charging and optional high-tech extras. Nearly 1000 first edition versions will be offered in grey with bigger wheels, orange brake calipers, a dash night vision camera, virtual exterior mirrors and black leather interior.

It has two powerful electric motors delivering a total 265kW of power (pushed to 300kW in “boost mode”), and a new generation of the quattro all-wheel drive.

The 95kWh battery’s low and central position reportedly helps with range and Audi says the battery can be charged to 80% in 30 minutes via DC fast chargers.

During more than 90% of all decelerations, the Audi e-tron recovers energy solely via its electric motors and also taps its maximum recuperation potential in combination with the integrated electrohydraulic brake control system. Audi says it is the world’s first carmaker to use such a system in an electrically powered series production vehicle.

Audi says its e-tron offers the spaciousness and comfort of one of the brand’s typical full-size models.

A comprehensive range of charging options with intelligent solutions for at home and on the go are included.

The e-tron route planner displays the appropriate route with the required charging points, automated billing at the charging station and remote control via smartphone.

Numerous assist systems help the driver. For example, the standard efficiency assist promotes an economic driving style by displaying predictive information and

performing automatic recuperation. If adaptive cruise assist is selected the system can also brake and accelerate the electric SUV predictively.
