Tesla launches Model Y Performance in Europe, NZ timing unclear

Tesla has launched the new Model Y Performance in Europe, featuring significant performance and design upgrades, but New Zealand buyers will need to wait as local timing remains unconfirmed.
The electric SUV accelerates from 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds, a substantial improvement over the 4.8 seconds achieved by the current all-wheel drive version. Despite the increased performance, WLTP range drops only marginally to 580 kilometres compared to 586km for the standard AWD model.
European pricing starts at €61,990 (approximately $110,000) in Germany before destination fees, making it roughly €9000 ($16,000) more expensive than the Model Y Long Range Dual Motor. First deliveries are scheduled for September 2025 in Germany and the Netherlands, with UK buyers waiting until October or November.
Enhanced battery and drivetrain technology

The Performance variant reportedly uses Tesla’s new 5M battery pack with improved LGES cells, offering around 82-84kWh of usable energy – approximately 5kWh more than the previous generation. Energy consumption is claimed to be reduced to 16.2kWh/100km.
Tesla describes the upgrade as a “new Performance drivetrain” but has not yet provided exact power output figures on its European website.
Design and chassis improvements

The Model Y Performance sits lower than standard variants and features new 21-inch “Arachnid 2.0” wheels, replacing the previous turbine-style design. A redesigned front bumper with modified air intakes and side openings gives the vehicle a sportier appearance, while the boot lid spoiler remains more prominent than on other Model Y variants.
For the first time, the Performance version includes adaptive suspension alongside what Tesla calls “Unique Drive Modes,” potentially widening the gap between sporty handling and everyday comfort compared to the previous fixed suspension setup.
Interior upgrades include carbon fibre trim, sports seats with enhanced lateral support and thigh bolstering, and a new 16-inch touchscreen display – an increase from the previous 15-inch unit. The sports seats retain both heating and ventilation functions found in standard Model Y Juniper variants.

New Zealand market implications
New Zealand sources its Model Y vehicles from Tesla’s Shanghai facility rather than European production, meaning the European launch does not directly indicate local availability timing. Tesla New Zealand has not announced when the Performance variant might arrive in local showrooms.
