EVs well past 10,000 mark

Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids have reached 10,248 in New Zealand.

The September figures are up 495 on the previous month’s 9753, according to the latest Ministry of Transport monthly electric and hybrid light vehicle registrations.

With three months left in the year, New Zealand will far exceed its 8000 EV end-of-year target towards the Government’s goal of 64,000 EVs by the end of 2021.

At the current monthly increase of nearly 500, that could put New Zealand’s EV fleet nearer 12,000 by year’s end.
The latest statistics show the country is well on track for the 16,000 EV target by the end of 2019 – with numbers expected to at least double every year.

For September, new light pure electric vehicle registrations reached 1835 – up 82 on August’s 1753, with new light plug-in hybrids recording a similar increase (80) to make 1758 last month.

The big increase is still in the used light pure electric market with 5739 recorded for September. That’s up 306 on August’s 5433 and still driven by the Nissan Leaf.

Used light plug-in hybrids totalled 808 in September, up 25 on the August total of 783.

Heavy EVs increased by two – reaching 108 in September.
