Isuzu and Cummins explore EV potential

Isuzu Motors (Japan) has signed a deal with US engine manufacturer Cummins to explore “collaborative opportunities” including electric technology.

Isuzu says the automotive industry is entering a period of “once-in-a-century innovation” for the diversification of power sources.

Diesel engines will remain a core focus for the company but it’s committed to exploring a range of technologies which includes electrification.

Isuzu will work with Cummins to explore potential opportunities in this area, a company statement says.

Isuzu Australia director and chief executive Phil Taylor says it’s exciting times ahead.

“We look forward to the potential benefits such a partnership represents for Isuzu globally and our customers here in Australia,” Taylor says.

Meanwhile, Isuzu NZ general manager Colin Muir told TransportTalk he is “excited for whatever future opportunities this announcement might offer the NZ market, be they in terms of EV or indeed any alternative power options”.

“The tried a true diesel engine will be with us for a while yet but the only constant is change, therefore it is pragmatic for the largest diesel engine manufacturer to embrace whatever the future might be.

“At a local level, Isuzu NZ is assessing its options relative to commercially viable EV’s in the foreseeable future,” Muir says.
