Dunedin officially launches second rapid EV charger

A second electric vehicle fast charger has officially opened in Dunedin, providing relief for those often waiting to use the city’s first one.

A ceremony for the new charger at the University of Otago included Green MP Gareth Hughes and emeritus professor Henrik Moller from the university’s centre for sustainability among those attending.

Moller says the opening of the second fast charger is a “relief” following the demand for the first such charger and encourages more EV drivers to visit the city, the Otago Daily Times reports.

During the first 20 days of use, EVs used the new, pay-for-use charger 128 times, ChargeNet NZ chief operating officer Nick Smith says.

He’s pleased the university stepped in after his almost three-year long hunt for another Dunedin charging site.

The charger on the corner of St David and Cumberland streets is a collaborative effort between ChargeNet NZ, Aurora Energy, and the university.

Otago University chief operating officer Stephen Willis says the university is pleased to provide the location to show the university’s commitment to sustainability is real and measurable.
