The Nikola Motor Company has created a hydrogen-electric truck for European markets.

Reservations have opened for the Nikola Tre – meaning “three” in Norwegian – and a prototype will be displayed along with the production intent Nikola Two and other zero-emission products at Nikola World in Phoenix, Arizona, on April 16-17, 2019.

“This truck is a real stunner and long overdue for Europe,” Nikola Motor Company founder and chief executive officer Trevor Milton says.

Nikola“It will be the first European zero-emission commercial truck to be delivered with redundant braking, redundant steering, redundant 800Vdc batteries and a redundant 120kW hydrogen fuel cell, all necessary for true level five autonomy. Expect our production to begin around the same time as our USA version in 2022-2023.”

The Nikola Tre has 500 to 1000hp, 6×4 or 6×2 configurations and a range of 500km to 1200km depending on options. The Tre will fit within the size and length restrictions for Europe, the company says.

European testing is expected to begin in Norway around 2020.

Nikola is also moving to identify a location for its European manufacturing facility.

Nel Hydrogen of Oslo is working with Nikola to provide hydrogen stations for the USA and will help the company secure resources for its European growth strategy.

By 2028, Nikola aims to have more than 700 hydrogen stations across the USA and Canada. Each station is capable of 2000kg to 8000kg of daily hydrogen production.

Nikola’s European stations are scheduled to come online around 2022 and are projected to cover most of the European market by 2030.

About US$11 billion in pre-order reservations have been received, Nikola says.
