Tesla confirms charging changes

Tesla will be retrofitting its Australia and New Zealand superchargers with dual charge cables in advance of the rollout of its Model 3, which will have a combined charging system (CCS) port.

The dual cables will support both CCS and Type 2 charging standards.

Model S and Model X will continue to have full access to the network using the existing Type 2 charge port.

In addition, Tesla will soon offer a CCS adapter for new and existing Model S and Model X owners which enables use of third-party CCS charging stations.

A Tesla spokesperson says while Tesla owners have access to home charging, supercharging and destination charging “we want to expand their ability to charge at third party fast chargers”.

Similar moves have been confirmed for Europe.

Tesla has rolled out six supercharger stations and more than 100 destination charging locations across New Zealand with continued rapid growth planned.
