Ola has recorded 500,000 rides after six months in New Zealand and has indicated it may launch an electric vehicle business here too.

The rideshare company launched in New Zealand in November and Ola New Zealand country manager Brian Dewil says it has exceeded expectations.

About 7000 drivers have signed on – 5500 of them driving, Dewil told the New Zealand Herald.

Rides have accounted for nearly two million kilometres and growth in rides is increasing about 50% week-on-week.

Using a smartphone app to pair drivers and riders, Ola’s New Zealand business has done well, according to Dewil.

Ola intends expanding its market share in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington and is reportedly second in dominance with the aim of being top.

Other ridesharing firms in New Zealand include Uber, Zoomy and DriveHer.
