The VW ID. R set a new electric vehicle lap record at the Nürburgring race circuit in Germany, going around in 6m 05.366 seconds.

That’s 40.564 seconds under the previous record established by the Nio EP9.

Powered by two electric motors, the VW also came second on the list of Nordschleife lap times.

Driven by Romain Dumas, the ID. R took second on the all-time lap speeds behind the Porsche 919 which recorded 5m 19.6s.

The 500kW ID. R reached a 204.96km/h average speed, establishing its third e-record run following Pikes Peak hill climb and Goodwood events.

“The Nordschleife of the Nürburgring is not only the world’s most demanding race track, it is also the ultimate test for production vehicles,” VW Group management board chairman Herbert Diess says.

A four-time winner of the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, Dumas says the record lap with the ID.R is another highlight on his favourite track.
