Australia’s AEV Robotics will co-develop lightweight automotive solutions for future transportation through an agreement with Teijin Group.

Teijin’s advanced materials such as polycarbonate resin, carbon and aramid fibres, and composite technologies will be used in lightweight vehicle construction, heat insulation and sound absorption.

The group will also support Japan’s Kogakuin University Solar Team’s participation in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge from Darwin to Adelaide on October 13-20.

AEV’s modular vehicle system will serve as the foundation for a standard for next-generation vehicles that satisfy the 2050 ‘Well-to-Wheel Zero Emission’ goal established by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to achieve the highest possible level of environmental performance.

AEV is developing a highly efficient electric vehicle platform and autonomous driving system geared towards low-speed electric vehicles (LS-EVs) for use in various fields such as medical care, logistics and industry, as well as conventional transportation.

In recent years, EVs have rapidly progressed as a practical solution for environmental load reduction based on the concept of connected, autonomous, shared and electric (CASE) next-generation vehicles. Their roles are evolving through mobility as a service (MaaS), which views transportation as a total service.

Fast-aging societies are encountering increasing problems with traffic crashes caused by seniors in urban areas and pedestrian vulnerability in rural areas, as well as traffic congestion, environmental degradation and advancing urbanisation in Japan.

In response, METI launched its ‘Strategic Commission for the New Automotive Era’ with the aim of strengthening the global competitiveness of Japan’s automotive industry.

Teijin presented AEV’s modular vehicle system at the Automotive Engineering Exposition 2019 Nagoya, July 17-19.

The group has more than 170 companies and about 20,000 employees in 20 countries.
