Who says electric vehicles can’t tow?

The Ford Motor Company put its prototype all-electric F-150 ute to a towing test, hauling a 566.99 tonne set of double-decker rail freight carriages along a short stretch of track.

The electric F-150 will be a new and exciting kind of Built Ford Tough, Ford electrification global director Ted Cannis says. “We’re aiming to blow away truck customers with new capabilities that they never saw coming.”

Cannis says; “Recently we set out to flex the muscles of our new, all-electric F-150 prototype. After all, truckers will do what truckers will do. And everyone wanted to see what could really be done when we pushed this all-electric truck’s capability.

“This demonstration showcases our commitment to remain the clear leader in trucks as well as to highlight our commitment to the future of electric vehicles.”

Ford says the F-150 battery-electric prototype is towing far beyond any production truck’s published capacity in a one-time short event demonstration.

“Never tow beyond a vehicle’s towing capacities and always consult the owner’s manual,” it warns.

Ford has already announced plans to bring an F-150 hybrid to market that can act as a mobile generator.

And among Ford’s new EVs for Europe is a plug-in Transit Custom, available in that region starting later this year.

It also plans to reveal a fully electric Mustang-inspired SUV, among some 40 hybrids and EVs (at least 16 set to be fully electric) planned within five years.
