More range for updated Outlander PHEV

Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand has confirmed details of its updated Outlander PHEV model – with a bigger engine and additional range on offer.

Range has been boosted to 55km on electricity, while the 2-litre petrol engine has been updated to a 2.4-litre unit.

The rear motor is now also more powerful, taking the combined power output to 130kW. The battery has grown in size from 12kWh too 13.8kWh.

Pricing has also been realigned – downwards. The XLS is now $52,990 and the VRX $57,990.

“One of the few SUV PHEVs in New Zealand to boast DC fast-charging capability, Outlander PHEV now offers a brand new combination of improved performance and exceptional value that we expect will entice more New Zealanders to get on board,” says Reece Congdon, MMNZ head of marketing and corporate affairs.

“There is no doubt that Kiwis’ interest in more environmentally friendly living is growing and, given 80% of our country’s electricity is generated from renewable resources, those who want the best of both worlds can feel good about buying a vehicle that offers EV-only capability, without compromising overall range or performance.”

An 8” Smartphone Link Display Audio System is now standard across all models, featuring updated PHEV info screens. Dual-zone air conditioner control units allow all passengers climate of choice and the instrument panel button layout has been revised.

For increased convenience, in-built vehicle accessories – including air conditioning, the audio system and USB ports – can be used while the battery is charging.

Mitsubishi notes improvements to New Zealand’s charging infrastructure – alongside vehicle upgrades – have broadened the possibilities for PHEV owners looking to go further in pure EV mode since when the model was originally launched without DC charging functionality.

“At that time, there were less than 50 Fast Charge stations around the country,” said Congdon. “There are now more than 200, including 160 Fast Charge stations and 40 other stations, allowing for longer, more convenient journeys on battery power alone,” Congdon says.

The Outlander PHEV‘s EV technology has evolved consistently since then. In 2017, the battery range was extended to 54km, EV priority mode was enabled and DC Fast Charge capability, which recharges the battery from 0 to 80% in around 25 minutes, was added.
