Polestar 2 online sales only

The Polestar 2 will be sold online in Australia and New Zealand with orders taken before it gets here later in 2020.

It’s the first electric vehicle offered from Volvo’s electric arm in both countries and packs a 78kW battery with two electric motors (front and rear axles) providing an estimated 500km range.

Emulating Tesla, the Polestar 2 and its SUV 3 version planned in 2021 may have one major Volvo dealership in each capital city dealing with the Polestar, but sales will be mostly online, motoring.com.au reports.

Polestar production is due to begin in China early in 2020, and Volvo may offer it through a subscription service whereby monthly payments cover power, insurance, servicing and other factors.

However, that’s still uncertain at this stage.

The five-door fastback is packed with features, including ‘IntelliSafe’ safety technology, seamless digital integration, autonomous driving aids, big touch screens, performance options, and “standard vegan interior materials, black ash and reconstructed wood decor elements, textile surface panels and optional Nappa leather”.

With 300kW of power and 660Nm torque, the Polestar 2 can get to 100km/h in under five seconds and has both AC and DC charging capability.

Polestar is confident of good uptake in both countries.

Media reports put the Polestar 2 price around 39,900 euros in Europe – about A$65,432 and NZ$69,444, although prices here aren’t known yet – with cheaper versions to follow.

Pre-orders are open at polestar.com for some countries. Reservations are only possible on initial launch markets and the global site is available for configuration only.
