Volvo offers PHEV versions across range

Volvo is offering plug-in hybrid versions of its entire model range, launching the new XC40 T5 twin engine.

The debut of the T5 twin engine hybrid system in the XC40 SUV means Volvo is the only manufacturer to offer plug-in hybrid versions across its entire product range – according to Volvo, which also says the XC40 T5 twin engine is the only PHEV in the premium compact SUV segment.

Its front-wheel-drive hybrid system uses a 180hp three-cylinder 1.5L petrol engine with 82hp electric motor for a combined output of 262hp.

Emissions are from 38g/km with a combined fuel consumption up to 141.1mpg.

Volvo has announced an electric model will join the line-up in 2020.

A new seven-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission supports the powertrain’s efficiency and performance, which Volvo says features for the first time in a new-generation model.

“The introduction of the T5 twin engine brings our electrification programme to the heart of our model line-up, demonstrating our commitment to giving all our customers the best possible choice when it comes to powertrains that are both better for the environment and also practical for their lifestyles and driving requirements,” Volvo Car UK’s managing director Kristian Elvefors says.

New Zealand will expect to see the PHEV variant in 2020, with the pure EV version to arrive in 2021.
