Toyota to unveil new Mirai at Tokyo show

Toyota will unveil its new Mirai fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The redesigned Mirai will boost range around 30% to about 650km, improve driving performance, have a sporty design, and offer passengers increased room and comfort with up to five seats, Toyota says.

The concept is of the second generation Mirai in its final development stages and will be on show at “Future Expo” from October 24 to November 4.

“We have worked to make a car that customers will want to drive all the time, a car that has an emotional and attractive design and the kind of dynamic and responsive performance that can bring a smile to the driver’s face,” Mirai chief engineer Yoshikazu Tanaka says.

“We will continue our development work focusing on that feeling, and we hope that with the new Mirai we will be a leader in helping to realise a hydrogen energy society.”

The first-generation Toyota Mirai was launched in 2014, and since then around 10,000 have been sold globally.

The new-generation Mirai is scheduled for launch starting late 2020, initially in Japan, North America and Europe.

The 30% increase in driving range is due to improvements in fuel cell system performance and increased hydrogen storage capacity.
