Delta does four EVs at once

The new Delta 150kW ultra-fast charger from YHI (New Zealand) can charge four EVs at once – two on DC and two on AC charging.

The ultra-fast charger is among a range of merchandise the company plans to display at EVworld NZ on August 1-3 at the ASB Showgrounds.

A solar power product that can run the home off grid and even charge an EV could be among them.

“We have a multitude of charging options, depending on what’s required and the property footprint,” YHI Energy divisional manager Aaron Gillon says.

There’s just about a charger for every occasion, from entry level Wallpod EVSE chargers, the Delta AC Mini Plus right through to the very popular 25kW Delta DC WallBox and the top UltraFast.

The latter can be sited almost anywhere as its modular unit is easy to transport and install, it has built-in safety protection, is Chademo and CCS2 compliant and can be used in all weather.

Cloud management solutions are integrated and the charger is simple to operate and can be upgraded as needed, Gillon says.

He’s got little doubt even bigger chargers with faster charge-up times will become available in the future, expecting something in the multi-megaWatt size toarrive around 2020-2021.

Doing some crystal ball gazing, Gillon says the assumption is that things will get “bigger, better and faster”, but he believes such charging could face some constraints in the technology.

Water cooled cabling could help prevent heating problems and there’s the issue of how to mitigate damage to such devices in public areas.

Meanwhile, interest in the Delta UltraFast unit is coming from companies with significant EV fleet requirements – these are not for your average home.

Some service stations are also considering installing such chargers as transport transitions from fossil fuels to the electric era.

Gillon says YHI sells a lot of 25kW DC chargers. “It surprised us how many sold.”

YHI also trades in tyres, and Gillon says one of the major brands, Pirelli, will have special EV tyres available here soon.

The EV tyres are designed for high torque, greater weight, long range and minimal noise, even designed for specific brands and models like the Jaguar I-Pace.

Gillon had the tyres changed on his electric Hyundai Ioniq Elite to provide better handling and safety.

YHI has just signed up to a PHEV for sales operations & project managerJasmine Roxborough, but that the expected launch of electric utes within the next few years will be “a big game changer” for companies like YHI, which need them to transport materials that are difficult to move by other means.
