AT welcomes school speed limits

Auckland Transport (AT) supports the Government’s ‘Tackling Unsafe Speeds’ programme which will see speed limits around urban schools reduced to 30km/h (or 40km/h where appropriate) and a maximum 60km/h near rural schools.
Associate transport minister Julie Anne Genter’s announcement comes just weeks after AT proposed speed reductions on more than 700km of Auckland roads.
“This new national policy will undoubtedly save lives and massively reduce the harm caused through crashes involving children,” AT safety general manager Bryan Sherritt says.
He says independent research by AT shows 67% of people support lower speeds near schools, kindergartens and community facilities.
“Driving even a few kilometres slower can make a huge difference when it comes to making our roads safer for everyone. This new speed limit will help to protect children, especially around busy drop off and pick up times.”
Julie Anne Genter made the announcement at Owairaka District School, Mount Albert, supported by principal Sheryl Fletcher.
Parent Leonie Freeman says she’s happy to hear the news.
“Our school is on a very busy road – so any changes to make it safer is welcomed. Lots of kids walk to school every day, so anything to make it safer is a great idea.”
