CEO of the Year for Fraser Whineray

Mercury’s Fraser Whineray has been named Deloitte and ServiceNow Chief Executive of the Year at the 2019 Deloitte Top 200 Awards.

Whineray has shown “an excellent track record, having delivered record earnings for Mercury along with solid dividend growth”, judge Neil Paviour-Smith says.

He says Whineray is highly regarded and is motivated to contribute to New Zealand’s long-term success.

Championing EVs throughout his tenure, Whineray leaves Mercury early in 2020 after 11 years’ service to become chief operating officer at Fonterra, a new position there.

Mercury helped introduce the 30% committers pledge in 2016 where about 30 companies promised to do their best to switch at least 30% of their vehicle fleets to electric by the end of this year.

The electricity gentailer was also a finalist in the Sustainable Business Leadership award, won by Air New Zealand.

Mainfreight’s Don Braid is Executive of the Decade, Mainfreight also named Company of the Year with Meridian Energy a finalist in that category.

Hamilton-based WEL Networks was a finalist in the Most Improved Performance sector, won by The Warehouse Group.

David Pilkington from the Port of Tauranga was named Chairperson of the Year with Pip Dunphy of Transpower New Zealand a finalist.

Dame Fran Wilde was named Visionary Leader and James Magill of Genesis Energy was a finalist in the Young Executive of the Year, won by Datacom Group’s James David.
