Tesla may supply batteries for other EVs

Tesla is looking more like a potential battery supplier for other EV manufacturers struggling with battery-related challenges.

So says Teslarati, pointing out the idea is becoming more feasible as more automakers face battery-related issues in their EV projects.

Teslarati cites the Volkswagen ID.3, Audi e-tron and Jaguar I-Pace as among those which had recent delays, some of which may have been due to battery supply.

It says auto makers often use suppliers such as LG Chem to supply EV batteries.

Rivian and Lucid Motors are also reported to be sourcing battery cells from LG Chem, while Tesla uses its own proprietary battery technology for its vehicles.

The 2170 cells for Tesla’s Model 3 are being produced at Giga Nevada, a massive factory in the US yet to be completed.

Teslarati explains that mastery of different skills like software management and battery optimisation is needed in making good, high performing EVs.

“Considering Tesla’s experience in building EVs, as well as the industry-leading quality of its batteries, the company may very well be poised to become one of the leading suppliers of cells for other electric car makers.”

Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has talked about the chances of Tesla supplying batteries and powertrains to other automakers before. “We’re definitely open to supplying batteries and powertrains and perhaps other things to other car companies.”

Fiat-Chrysler chief executive Steve Manley has also mentioned the idea of using key Tesla components, including its ‘skateboard’ platform.
