Renewable energy producer Neoen is building the largest battery storage unit in Finland.

At 30MW/30MWh the Yllikkälä Power Reserve One will be the first independent, large-capacity battery to be connected to the Finnish grid, providing rapid storage to mitigate frequency variations, aiding EV charging as well

Following development of the Hedet and Mutkalampi wind farms, Neoen has more than 3GW in operation or under construction and plans at least 5GW capacity by the end of 2021.

The company is active in France, Finland, Australia, Mexico, El Salvador, Argentina, Portugal, Ireland, Zambia, Jamaica and Mozambique.

Neoen operates France’s most powerful solar PV farm (300MWp) in Cestas, and the world’s largest lithium-ion power reserve (150MW/193.5MWh storage capacity) in Hornsdale, Australia.

Aside from greater reliability and lower electricity grid stabilisation costs, the Finnish plant will facilitate the integration of future renewable energies projects and contribute to Finland’s aim of being carbon neutral by 2035, Neoen says.

“This latest investment in energy storage illustrates our aim of becoming a leading player in the renewable energies market in Finland over the long term,” Neoen regional director Christophe Desplats-Redier says.

Neoen chairman and chief executive Xavier Barbaro says the company has demonstrated the effectiveness of its battery-based grid-balancing solutions in Australia, El Salvador, and France over the past few years.
