Triple order of Tesla Semi

Walmart Canada is more than tripling its orders for the Tesla Semi electric truck.

The company is reserving 130 units – one of the largest Semi orders from Canada – and follows Walmart’s announced global goal to reach zero emissions by 2040.

Zero-emissions vehicles play a huge part in the company’s sustainability goals, with Walmart Canada aiming to switch 20% of its fleet to electric by the end of 2022, on its way to using 100% alternative power for the fleet by 2028, Teslarati

The upgraded Tesla Semi order forms a part of the retail chain’s efforts to innovate and highlight sustainability, Walmart Canada logistics and supply chain senior vice-president John Bayliss says. Bayliss notes the benefits brought by EVs such as the Semi, especially in safety and innovation.

Walmart Canada transportation vice-president Francis Lalonde says the Semi’s safety features and advanced equipment are key reasons behind the company’s bigger order.

These include the Semi’s low operational costs, the vehicle’s 800km range, its performance, its camera system and Tesla’s autopilot.

“The safety and smart elements in the design are at the heart of our smart transportation ambition which will use technology and data to lower our operating costs and improve safety for associates,” Lalonde says.

The Tesla Semi is expected to be produced in limited volumes later this year.
