Electric Hummer in 2021

General Motors has revealed its electric supertruck GMC 2022 Hummer EV, expected to start production in late 2021.

The Hummer EV will be the first full EV in GMC’s portfolio and is powered by GM’s new Ultium battery system.

Production will be at GM’s Factory Zero Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Centre where the company has invested US$2.2 billion for EV development.

It is expected to produce 1000 horsepower and 15,592Nm of torque generated by three separate motors within two Ultium drive units in 4WD.

It will be compatible with 800-volt DC public fast charging of up to 350kW enabling 161km of range in 10 minutes of charging.

GM says it will deliver more than 563km in driving range on a full charge based on preliminary testing.

GM president Mark Reuss says the Hummer EV brings the company “another step closer to an all-electric future”.

“With our Ultium Drive architecture as the foundation for an exceptionally broad range of performance, Hummer EV is perfect for the customer who wants capability, efficiency and performance.”

GMC chief engineer Al Oppenheiser says the truck was built with one goal in mind – to build “the most capable factory truck ever”.

“It’s an absolute off-road beast with a unique e4WD drive system that provides manoeuvrability unlike anything GM has ever offered before,” he says.

One unique feature includes the segment-exclusive CrabWalk which allows the rear wheels and front wheels to steer at the same angle at low speeds, enabling diagonal movement of the vehicle on challenging terrain.

Design executive director Phil Zak says the truck “visually communicates extreme capability, which is reinforced with rugged architectural details offered with a premium, well-executed and appointed interior”.
