EVs should display fuel economy labels

An alert has been issued to dealers that all vehicles should display vehicle fuel economy labels (VFELs).

The Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association (VIA) says a reminder has come from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) on the issue.

While battery electric vehicles (BEVs) don’t need the labels, VIA technical manager Malcolm Yorston says it’s best if they display them anyway so vehicle dealers don’t get confused and miss what labels should be on.

He says the labels need to be on hybrids, especially those with petrol-powered range extenders.

“If you don’t display a VFL on all vehicles you sell you could be facing fines of up to $5000 per vehicle,” the VIA warns.

 “All motor vehicle traders are required by law to display fuel economy labels on all vehicles displayed for sale.

“You also need to include fuel economy information for online listings.”

Traders can expect EECA to check vehicles for compliance on the yard and online at any time.
