An original EV returns

The electric Auckland Dockline Tram is back on track for the 1.5km loop of Wynyard Quarter from February 7.

It will run on Sundays, public holidays and Saturdays during long weekends from 10am-4pm, including during the remainder of the 36th America’s Cup, and beyond.

The tram takes passengers along Jellicoe, Halsey, Gaunt and Daldy streets – providing live commentary on the area and its history.

The tram route was suspended in August 2018 due to Wynyard Quarter development.

All-day tickets are priced at $2 per adult and $1 a child, while those with a SuperGold Card and under-fives ride for free.

As the tram is considered a tourist attraction and not public transport, payment must be made by card or cash with AT HOP cards not accepted.

Face masks won’t be mandatory under New Zealand law, however passengers are encouraged to scan with the NZ COVID Tracer app and are welcome to wear a face mask if they wish.

The tram’s return comes thanks to a new partnership between the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) and Panuku Development Auckland, Auckland Council’s urban regeneration agency.

The agreement, for an initial period of up to three years, including regular reviews, will see MOTAT operate the tram to ensure it runs smoothly.

“MOTAT has considerable tramway experience as well as a talented team of drivers, who are excited to share and educate the public on the heritage and operation of these beautiful machines,” MOTAT director and chief executive Michael Frawley says.

Tram passengers are invited to visit MOTAT’s tram fleet, heritage transport and other examples of Kiwi innovation by keeping their tickets to redeem at MOTAT against the standard general admission price.
