Jaguar Racing leading ABB FIA Formula E
Sam Bird’s win in the second Diriyah E-Prix Formula E night race means Jaguar Racing leads the ABB FIA Formula E Teams’ World Championship by seven points.
Teammate Mitch Evans, who was third in the first round, retired after a collision in the second round of the double-header, and fellow Kiwi Nick Cassidy’s debut ended in 14th for the new Envision Virgin Racing team driver.
Bird remains the only driver to have won a race in every Formula E season, extending his victories to 10, this being his debut win for Jaguar Racing.
Driving the new Jaguar I-Type 5, Bird battled with his old teammate Robin Frijns (Envision Virgin Racing) for most of the race before taking the victory under a red flag behind the safety car in a crash shorted event.
“An absolutely fantastic way to start the season – two podiums in two races, a third place and a win is a really brilliant start for Jaguar in this most incredibly competitive world championship,” Jaguar Racing team director James Barclay says.
Cassidy recorded one of the fastest lap times of the Riyadh Street Circuit during the group qualifying stage for the Diriyah E-Prix, provisionally earning a place in the superpole.
But he was among three drivers found to have improved during a yellow flag prompted by a crash, with Cassidy dropping to 20th on the grid instead of a possible top six as a result.
The lights turn green for the third round of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship on the streets of Rome on April 10 where both Bird and Evans have been victorious.
