Mini brand to go all-electric by 2030

Mini will sell only EVs by 2030, a report suggests.

BMW’s Mini brand will follow Europe’s Ford, Bentley, Jaguar and Volvo in selling only battery electric cars (BEVs).

The British brand will produce its last internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle in 2025, and around half of all Mini sales should be electric by 2027, Automotive News Europe reports.

Mini does sell one all-electric car – the Mini Electric, called the Mini Cooper SE in some countries.

BMW chief executive Oliver Zipse is due to announce Mini’s EV plan in presenting its annual report on March 17.

A spokesman for BMW declined to comment, according to Automotive News Europe.

Increasing valuations achieved by EV-only companies led by Tesla and more stringent emissions regulations have accelerated the worldwide shift to EVs, it adds.

BMW makes Minis at its United Kingdom Oxford plant and in The Netherlands and Germany.

It also aims to produce Minis in China from 2023 with joint venture partner Great Wall, possibly starting with an electric SUV.

The BMW Group is moving more to electrification, its electric arm marking 10 years in February after producing the BMW i3.

The company aims to offer 25 electrified models by 2023 and have more than seven million electrified vehicles on the road worldwide by 2030, two-thirds of which will be fully electric.
