Dealers encouraged to discuss new EV charging standards
The imported used car industry body is encouraging its dealer members to discuss the latest publicly available standards (PAS) for residential EV chargers developed by Standards NZ with buyers of secondhand vehicles.
PAS 6011:2021 was developed by Standards New Zealand specifically for residential charging infrastructure for EVs.
This PAS was funded by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) to ensure motorists had access to guidelines for safe installation of EV charging infrastructure in their residences.
VIA was a member of the technical advisory group that developed this PAS and encourages dealers to download it and to use it when discussing with customers what they need for a home charging installation for their EV.
It says this PAS covers key aspects that equipment installers need to consider, prior to the installation of an EV charger in a residential environment.
EECA says a dedicated home charger is both safer for home use and energy efficient, and a smart charger can also receive a signal from the electricity supplier to charge when costs are lowest.
It says an EV smart charger offers better flexibility and the potential to lower energy cost.
