Tesla Model 3 top EV in Europe

Tesla sold four times more Tesla Model 3 sedans than its closest competitor in Europe during March.

It comprised more than 10% of plug-in car sales in Europe that month, delivering 24,184 units out of the about 227,000 registered, Teslarati reports.

The Tesla Model 3 is also among the most popular new EVs in Australia and New Zealand too.

The Hyundai Kona EV was the second top selling plug-in model in Europe last month with 5643 deliveries.

The Volvo XC40 PHEV (5567), Renault Zoe (5482), and Volkswagen ID.4 (5104) rounded out the top five models there.

The Tesla Model 3 has become the world’s best-selling luxury sedan and Tesla now hopes the Model Y will become the best-selling vehicle in any category by 2022 or 2023.

“For Model 3 to be outselling its combustion engine competitors, I think, is quite remarkable,” Tesla chief executive Elon Musk says.

Tesla Model 3’s European market lead is also shared by CleanTechnica, which reports plug-in vehicles get 16% market share.

CleanTechnica says BEVs doubled their sales year-on-year while PHEVs continued at a faster pace, seeing sales jump by 264% year-over-year last month.

“With a higher than expected end-of-quarter peak, the Model 3 won its second best seller title in a row, confirming its good form this year.”
