Electric heads Wellington transport plan

An electric public transport system is due to be constructed between Wellington Railway Station at the heart of the central business district and Wellington Airport at Rongotai as part of the $6.4 billion Let’s Get Wellington Moving programme.

It aims to reduce reliance on private vehicles and help cut carbon emissions, with recent changes favouring light rail (electric trams) or electric buses.

Public consultation on Thorndon Quay and Hutt Road options close on Tuesday June 8, with about 16 shortlisted proposals including greater priority and allowance for buses (including electric), and cycling/walking (including e-mobility such as e-bikes and e-scooters).

Let’s Get Wellington Moving is a joint initiative between the Wellington City Council, Greater Wellington Regional Council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
