EVs reach 37,156 in 2021
EVs recorded a huge surge in registrations during December.
They achieved 37,156 – 1591 more than November’s 35,565, according to the Ministry of Transport’s newly released figures.
New light pure electrics, as in the Tesla Model 3, had one of the best results – up 1113 (from 10,992 in November to 12,105 in December).
While new light plug-in hybrids were also in strong demand – rising 1149 (from 5952 in November to 6101 in December).
The rise in these two categories may reflect the new models becoming available in New Zealand and the Clean Car Discount rebate.
In the used market, secondhand light pure electrics were up 205 (from 15,124 in November to 15,329 in December) and light PHEVs were up 223 (from 3188 in November to 3311 in December).
Heavy EVs increased by just one – from 309 in November to 310.
Overall vehicle imports were up 37.4% year-on-year in 2021 with a total 301,314 hitting the wharves over the 12 months compared to 219,236 the year before.

I wanted to know whether there was a corresponding reduction in sales of new and used petrol and diesel light vehicles, or whether all these evs are just added onto an ongoing increase in fossil fuel powered vehicles rather than actually replacing them (and therefore reducing transport climate pollution).
Can you report on this please?
Thanks!
