Sony Honda Mobility’s first EV planned by 2025
Sony and Honda have signed a joint venture agreement to establish Sony Honda Mobility to produce EVs and provide mobility services.
The new company will engage in the sale of high value added EVs and the June 16 announcement is a result of discussion of a strategic alliance in the mobility field between the parties revealed on March 4, 2022.
It will aim to bring together Honda’s environmental and safety technologies, mobility development capabilities, vehicle body manufacturing technology and after-sales service management experience, with Sony’s expertise in the development and application of imaging, sensing, telecommunication, network and entertainment technologies.
Sony Honda Mobility plans to produce EVs and services for mobility in 2025 and is based in Tokyo, Japan with 10 billion yen in capital.
While Sony produced an EV concept for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in 2020, the joint venture will see EVs made by Honda with Sony producing the mobility services platform.
“I am very pleased to have reached this day, which represents a major milestone in realising the initiatives we have been working on until now with the aim of contributing to the evolution of mobility,” says Sony Honda Mobility president and chief operating officer Izumi Kawanishi.
“By combining the many strengths of Sony and Honda, we intend to accelerate development and lead the evolution of mobility.”
