EECA publishes approved EV smart chargers

A list of approved EV smart chargers recommended for residential and commercial use has been published by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) which reckons smart charging could save New Zealand about $4 billion.

The approved list is designed to help New Zealanders identify and purchase smart and efficient EV chargers that meet the specifications developed to ensure chargers have connectivity, aren’t locked into proprietary systems, and will work with a demand flexible system in future, says EECA.

“Smart chargers also enable faster and safer at-home charging (compared to a three-pin plug) and help EV owners take advantage of cheaper off-peak electricity rates.”

EECA modelling shows that widespread use of smart charging technology could help to effectively manage the increased peak electricity demand that will come from private electric vehicles, potentially saving $4 billion in grid infrastructure costs by 2050.

The list will be updated on a rolling basis as more chargers are approved, it says.

“Fleet managers, EV drivers or those considering an EV can also check out the list.”

EECA says it is again sponsoring the Large Energy User Initiative of the Year at this year’s Energy Excellence Awards with the finalists announced June 18 and awards presented at the Cordis Auckland on August 28.

Entries are now open with submissions welcome by May 8.
