Nelson Tasman ‘eBus’ service boosts use
A year’s trial allowing large dogs free (one pet per customer 16 and over) on Nelson Tasman’s electric “eBus” service starts April 1.
Large dogs must wear a muzzle and leash and may be refused a ride if likely to be a nuisance or safety risk to other passengers, with no refund for the adult travelling with the dog then provided if already paid.
Nelson says it’s following the approach taken by the Auckland Council with Auckland Transport completing a similar trial.
“This is a trial and as such it is really important for pet owners to stick to the rules if we want this to become a permanent fixture of our bus service,” says Nelson eBus.
“As it is a trial we will be accepting feedback from dog owners, and public transport users. We will determine how the service will continue if it was to pass the trial phase.”
Small dogs have been allowed on Nelson eBuses in approved pet carriers (which also applies to larger dogs provided the carrier can fit under seats or on the passenger’s lap) since 2023.
People travelling with a dog must clean up any “pet mess” before leaving the bus.
The eBus service’s introduction to Nelson Tasman from August 1 last year has seen an 80% rise in bus trips, some media say.
About 17 12.5 metre-long electric buses were provided to replace mainly diesel buses.
