Hyundai Ioniq 5 N to compete at Pikes Peak
Two 478kW Ioniq 5 N EVs will contest the Electric Production SUV class at the 102nd Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in the US on June 23 this year, says Hyundai.
The brand says it has four EVs competing in the Colorado event (aka The Race to the Clouds), including two modified Ioniq 5 Ns to be revealed prior to the ADAC RAVENOL 24-hour Nürburgring on May 30.
The four aim to beat various EV records at the Pikes Peak event (PPIHC).
“We are returning to the mountain stronger than we have left it, with a class leading electric SUV in the form of Ioniq 5 N,” says Hyundai N brand and motorsport head Till Wartenberg.
“Hyundai has a history of proving new technologies and products at Pikes Peak going all the way back to 1992 and the Ioniq 5 N brings that concept to high performance electric cars.
“The production spec Ioniq 5 N will demonstrate what customers can expect from their vehicles.”
Ioniq 5 N drivers in the Electric Production SUV class are Paul Dallenbach and Ron Zaras – an 11-time PPIHC winner who set an overall record in 1993 and a PPIHC rookie and former Hoonigan executive respectively.
“As a lifelong fan of rallying, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has been a bucket list event to take part in from the first time I watched the film ‘Climb Dance’ on a 56k Internet connection,” says Zaras.
Two of the additional Ioniq 5 N modified models will be driven by Dani Sordo and Robin Shute – a Hyundai Motorsport Spanish World Championship driver, and a four-time overall winner and King of the Mountain title holder at Pikes Peak respectively.
Minor updates were made to the Ioniq 5 N production class EVs to comply with the rules from a safety perspective, says Hyundai.
EVs and Beyond earlier outlined the Ioniq 5 N’s arrival here.
