New images surface of MG’s all-electric SUV

Anticipation is mounting for the global release of MG‘s all-new, all-electric small SUV based on the MG4 hatchback as a successor to its popular ZS EV.

Images of the new model were spotted in patents filed with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, as reported by Auto Express.

It will take on a new name, yet to be disclosed, but in China, it will be known as the ES5.  

A global unveiling for the new EV is expected to take place any day now, according to MG’s Chinese social media feeds.

Styling shows more than a few hints of the MG4 and influences from the MG Cyberster. Headlights are much slimmer. It also gets black plastic cladding on the wheel arches and sills, along with roof rails.

MG’s new electric SUV is much larger than before, according to the MIIT filing. It measures 4476mm in length (+162mm) and has a wheelbase of 2730mm (+149mm). It is also wider and lower than its predecessor.

The new electric SUV sits on the same Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) as the MG4. It should therefore be available with similar battery/motor (125kW) combinations. The longest-range version should do 500km on a single charge. It will use a new lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery sourced from CATL.
