MG Motor New Zealand has confirmed pricing and specification for the all-new MGS5 EV, a rear-wheel-drive electric SUV set to arrive locally in late August.

The model will be offered in four trims across two battery sizes: a 49kWh pack with a quoted 340km WLTP range, and a larger 62kWh version capable of up to 430km WLTP. Both Excite and Essence variants will be available for each.

Pricing starts at $44,990 plus on-road costs for the Excite 49, climbing to $54,990 for the flagship Essence 62. All models share a single-motor powertrain producing 125kW and 250Nm, with 0–100km/h times between 8.0 and 8.6 seconds. Top speed is listed at 170km/h.

Built on MG4 platform

The MGS5 EV sits on MG’s Modular Scalable Platform, the same architecture underpinning the MG4 hatch. With a five-link rear suspension, rear-wheel drive, and dual-pinion EPS steering, MG says the SUV has been engineered for the dynamics of an EV rather than adapted from an ICE platform.

The battery pack measures just 110mm in height, allowing for a lower centre of gravity and improved cabin space. MG also highlights rapid charging capability, with a 30 to 80 percent charge achievable in around 19 minutes under ideal conditions.

Features and interior

Standard equipment includes a 12.8-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside MG’s upgraded interface. The Essence grade adds features such as a panoramic sunroof, hands-free power tailgate, and an upgraded interior finish.

Cabin practicality is a selling point, with 453 litres of luggage capacity expanding to 1441L with the 40:60 split rear seats folded. The MGS5 EV is also compatible with MG’s iSMART smartphone app, allowing remote functions such as charging control, vehicle location, and route planning.

Warranty and launch offer

The SUV comes with MG’s warranty package of up to 10 years or 250,000km when serviced within the dealer network, supported by nearly 20 dealerships across the country. Roadside assist is also included for the duration of the warranty.

As a launch promotion, the first 30 customers to take delivery will receive a complimentary 7kW MG Charge Hub, though installation costs are excluded.

MG’s positioning

Peter Ciao, chief executive officer for MG Motor Australia and New Zealand, said the MGS5 EV builds on the success of the MG4 while catering to New Zealand’s preference for SUVs.

“The MGS5 EV will offer the best value for Kiwi families in the electric SUV segment,” he said. “New Zealanders loved the driving dynamics of the MG4, with these carried over to the MGS5 EV. Our love of an SUV, combined with MG’s upgraded tech features, is sure to be embraced by Kiwi motorists.”

With the ZS EV already established as a top-selling electric model, the MGS5 EV gives MG a second battery-electric SUV in the local line-up, positioned above the smaller ZS and below the larger HS Plus EV plug-in hybrid.
