Hyundai reveals rugged hydrogen concept
Hyundai has pulled back the curtain on its latest concept vehicle, the INITIUM, a hydrogen fuel cell electric SUV with a targeted range of over 650km.
Revealed at Hyundai’s ‘Clearly Committed’ event in Seoul, the INITIUM marks the brand’s ongoing exploration of hydrogen technology and debuts its new ‘Art of Steel’ design approach, aimed at balancing clean energy with a robust design.
The brand currently retails just one hydrogen-powered vehicle in New Zealand, the Nexo, though the incredibly limited refuelling infrastructure means few have been sold – with the small handful in the country mostly owned by Hyundai New Zealand as showpieces.
Hyundai says the INITIUM signals the look of its next production fuel-cell car, due in early 2025, and claims it “blends city-driving essentials with features meant for outdoor flexibility.”

Built on Hyundai’s HTWO hydrogen platform, the INITIUM embraces an SUV form with functional lines, large 21-inch wheels, and a roof rack for added practicality.
With a 150kW motor, the INITIUM offers reasonable acceleration and steady highway performance. Its design includes hydrogen fuel tanks for a range of over 650km, while aerodynamic wheels and low-rolling resistance tyres support overall efficiency. The SUV includes Hyundai’s V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) feature, letting drivers use the vehicle’s power for household and personal devices, which could be helpful for outdoor activities or as backup energy at home.
Hyundai has not released interior renders but claims it has wide rear doors and reclining rear seats to appeal to families. Additionally, the concept includes a built-in route planner specifically for hydrogen refuelling.
Hyundai plans to showcase the INITIUM at the upcoming LA Auto Show and Auto Guangzhou in November.
