A general decline in new EV sales has been noticed by the Motor Industry Association (MIA).

MIA chief executive Aimee Wiley says November 2024 data reveals distinct patterns across vehicle categories, reflecting the market’s evolving dynamics..

That’s particularly evident in the light passenger vehicles (LPV) market 5.5% decline in November and year-to-date “suggesting stable but slightly reduced demand in this traditionally dominant segment” and a switch to more flexible transport with light commercial vehicles (LCV) which reached a 19.6% share in November, up from 14.9% in November last year.

LCVs represent 26.2% of total industry sales, rising from 21.5% in 2023, says MIA.

Top selling new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in November were the Ford Mustang Mach-E (86 units), Polestar 2 (62 units), Volkswagen ID.5 (54 units), Volkswagen ID.4 (48 units) and BYD Atto 3 (44 units), MIA says.

The Mach-E was also the top new BEV seller in October 2024 with 143 units.

It was among a number of EVs to get price cuts too.

The top five plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) in November 2024 were the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (159 units), followed by the Mitsubishi Outlander (32 units), BYD Sealion 6 (25 units), Skoda Octavia (15 units), and Hyundai Tucson (12 units), MIA says.

Hybrid vehicles (HEVs) top sellers were the Toyota RAV4 (1877 units), followed by the Toyota Corolla (419 units), Toyota Yaris Cross (335 units) and the Toyota Highlander (221 units).

Heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs) continued their stable performance in November, reflecting a consistent year-to-date trend driven by business and rental demand, says MIA.

“Business buyers accounted for 50.2% and rental buyers 40.6% of sales in November 2024.”
